Explore the Basque Traditions and Culture in the heart of the Baztan Valley with its witch caves and castle ruins, Roman paths and medieval fortifications. The Baztan Valley is in the heart of the beautiful and dramatic Basque Lands. Located forty-five kilometers from Pamplona, this lush valley, adorned with hamlets of white washed farmhouses, presents an air of mystery and witchcraft. Here we explore the historic witch caves and castle ruins, Roman paths, and medieval fortifications. We walk to a picturesque village tavern and sample traditional rural foods which are claimed to be the best in the region! Learn about the ancient traditions of hunting pigeons without rifles. Then roll up your sleeves to try your hand at cooking some traditional dishes for which this region is gastronomically famous. Savor freshly caught trout, in an ancient watermill otherwise known as the ‘mill from hell’ now transformed into a picturesque restaurant. As we reach the border of France, learn about the legends, tales and true stories of times when the inquisition dominated the region and locals were accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake. From the highest point of a hilltop castle we can see the outposts of the Kingdom of Navarre.
