THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SAN FERMIN
The Song “A San Fermín Pedimos”
This is a tune that the mozos (those who run with the bulls) sing facing a small relic of San Fermin placed in a niche in the Santo Domingo wall of the city. They sing the song three times in both Spanish and Basque. It is sung 5, 3 and 1 minutes before the rockets blasts and the corral gates open.
Other Taurine Events
In preparation for the bullfight, tradition dictates that the bulls be paired with their bullfighters in a fair way in an official and very social act. This is a fantastic opportunity to view an authentic and exclusive taurine event during the ’vermout’. From above the corrals and with a drink in hand, we get a close look at these magnificent animals and watch them be channeled individually through a series of corridors below, so the bullfighters can appraise the bulls’ figure and stance before they are moved into individual pens. This activity is applicable for children as there is no violence at all, and the kids can get just a closer look at the bulls.
Non-violent Taurine Events
If you like the idea of attending an event in the bullring but prefer not to watch a classic bullfight, here is your experience. Events with Recortadores: These young taurine experts called Recortadores risk their lives to give us a spectacular show of agility and bravery as they confront one of the most dangerous animal alive. Bulls are very fast, but they men manage to keep from being tangled in the bull’s horns and under the pincher hooves. This event is about acrobacy, not challenging the bull in a duel to the death, therefore it is apt for children of all ages.
Firework Bull or Fire-bull - El Toro de Fuego
At ten o'clock in the evening, the kids have their own exclusive bull run. An athletic adult carrying a large contraption on his back and over his head plays the bull. This is a firework bull which leaves the Plaza de Santiago square, just behind the Town Hall, with the aim of chasing after the crowds of parents and kids who run from the bull, but the brave kids defy the bull and urge it on. This event of flashing light and fire and crackling powder is a huge hit with kids from 3 to 14 years old. The fire-bull structure is made of a wood and paper mâche structure, that looks like a bull. The top and sides of the contraption are laden with rockets and fireworks that come in all sizes and forms making this bull unpredictable and quite scary. The carrier of the fire-bull needs to be as fit as a fiddle as his / her job is to run after kids through the historic quarter until all of the fireworks have done their job.
The firework bull is an ancient event, which is already illustrated in the Bull Chronicles of the 17th century. In those days, rockets were mounted on real animal's sides. Due to the obvious reasons of the cruelty involved in this game, it has been replaced by the bull-like structure used today.
