From the farthest-reaching point of Biscaya through the Basque region to the border of Southern France, this route is studded with cultural gems and stunning seascapes and mountains. As we hike from one hotspot to another, we enjoy the fresh air and the picturesque fishing towns and mountain getaways, all while sampling the extraordinary cuisine this area is famous for.

We pick you up in downtown Bilbao and set off to watch fishermen auction off their morning catch to local restaurants in Bermeo. We hike from the coast to the beautiful islet hermitage San Juan de Gaztelugatxe,dedicated to John the Baptist that connects to the mainland by a sprinkle of stone steps. This dramatic isle of Gaztelugatxe was used as the location for Daenerys Targaryen’s ancestral home of Dragonstone in the Game of Thrones. After a lunch with spectacular ocean views, we travel into dense forest to Gernika, a city famed for its role in the Spanish Civil War. Our hotel is a magnificent castle, the Castillo de Arteaga.

We visit the Urdaibai Bird Center located in the heart of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, where we can observe wild birds in the marshes where scientists study their migrations and habitats. Our walk takes us along impressive cliffs, passing picturesque villages and Basque farms. Upon arriving at Elantxobe, we eat delicious seafood pintxos and the perfect wine to combine.

Zumaia – Getaria – Hondarribia
We walk from Zumaia a portion of the breathtaking coast where we can see the unusual and beautiful Flysch and karst formations. Later, at lunch, we toast with a fine txakoli, the local sweet sparkly wine, in the fishing village of Getaria. We visit the colorful Hondarribia, where your hotel is nothing less than a converted 10th-century castle. We dine in the historic quarter in a Michelin-starred restaurant for what we believe to be the best seafood in town.

We hike along the coast on the northern route of the Camino de Santiago to a beautiful fishing port. Feast on an exquisite seafood meal in this delightful town where Victor Hugo once resided. Sail away to San Sebastian in style on an antique schooner, while sipping cava. Gourmet discovery remains high on the agenda as we arrive to San Sebastián – the haute-cuisine heart of Basque Country. You’ll stay in the elegant beachside Hotel Londres for two nights. For dinner, dine on traditional Basque pintxos in the town’s historic center.

We set off to Navarra to experience a full day of mountain relaxation. Up a winding mountain pass that culminates in an idyllic landscape ideal for a country walk with picturesque white-washed Basque farm houses. The highlights of the day is an in-house wine tasting in the 5 star hotel Arantxa bodega and simply to enjoy this stunning hotel and the serenity of this privileged place in the world.

You love to hike and are not afraid of a little sweat and some good uphills.
Our trip may include 12-15 km (7-10 miles) a day on various grades of terrain on a diversity of surfaces. Expect steeper climbs with phenomenal views and mountainscapes.
Biking
You love to bike at home regularly and can handle some sweat.
Our trip may include 40-60 km (25-40 miles) a day on rolling terrain with a few longer climbs rewarded with views and high points you will not want to miss.
Walking
You enjoy longer hikes with an incline or two and don’t mind pushing it a bit. Our trip may include around 6-12 km (4-8 miles) a day of walking on mostly flat terrain with a couple steeper but non-sustained climbs.
Biking
You ride your bike at home and are comfortable on a bike for a few hours. Our trip may include 40-60 km (25-40 miles) a day on mostly flat terrain and will include inclines and the occasional sustained climb.
Walking
You love to push yourself and can handle a longer hike with some sustained inclines and steep uphills. Our trip may include 10-15 km (6 -10 miles) on terrain that can be quite hilly and rolling with a few steeper climbs thrown in for good measure. The views will blow you away.
Biking
Test your mettle on off-the-beaten-paths that will stun and delight, along with legendary cycling routes in the north of Spain. You are an avid rider who loves to push themselves and enjoy the challenge of a big climb or sustained inclines. Our trip may include over 60-80 km (37 – 49 miles) a day in rolling hills with frequent climbs and even longer options available. You will be the master of your universe.
Walking
You like to go on walks at home but nothing that works up a sweat. Our trip may include around 5-10 km (3-6 miles) a day of walking on mostly flat terrain, with an occasional hill on well maintained trails or walkways.
Biking
You are in decent shape but don’t habitually ride a bike at home. Our trip may include 30-50 km (20-30 miles) a day on mostly flat terrain with a few small and achievable inclines.
