An Overview of Your Journey

Join us on a pleasure ride along the Basque coast, from its southernmost border of France to the farthest reaching point of Biscaya. While we coast from one Basque hotspot to another, we enjoy coastal landscapes along the Atlantic, its picturesque towns and villages and the exquisite gastronomy of this land.

Welcome to Pamplona

We arrive in Pamplona - the capital of Navarra and explore this jewel in the raw. Find out why Hemingway was captured by its year-round festive street life atmosphere, join us on the running of the bulls walkabout while we go bar hopping for gastronomic delights and try our notorious pintxos, relax on a terrace and watch the pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago stroll into town. Join us through the cobbled streets in the heart of the historic quarter to discover 3000 years of history and culture.

Into the French Basque Lands

Our journey takes us to the green landscapes of the Basque-French coast, Baiona. Through charming valleys laden with tradition and history, discover some secrets of Basque mythology and visit caves where the witches are said to invoke their spells. Reaching the lowlands – home of the Basque Iberian pork cuts and famous Basque cakes, we sit down to try their specialities. Stroll along the narrow walking streets and city walls of elegant Baiona and Biarritz, where there is always time to take a dip in the Atlantic.

Sail the Atlantic to San Sebastian

Along the Txingudi bay, on the border of Spain and France, both within the Basque culture, we are off on windy coastal paths passing along white-washed homes and colorful rooftops, the gentle slopes of lush green forests on our left and fine sandy beaches on our right. The mountains slowly grow steeper into vertical cliffs where hidden fishing villages with their small harbor taverns are bountiful in pintxos, wine and txakoli.

An authentic 19th century sailboat awaits us in the Port of Hondarribia. We sail west to San Sebastian with its elegant French architecture and its picture perfect beaches gleaming with nostalgic and aristocratic air. We reside in a beachside hotel and dine on traditional Basque pintxos in the town’s historic centre.

Gourmet discovery and Geographic wonders

The Gipuzkoa coast is breathtaking. From a bird’s eye view on the edge of the Guetaria cliffs past the vineyards below and the Atlantic coast in the distance, we toast with a fine glass of the sparkling white wine of the region – a grand cheers with Txakoli. Walk through the renowned UNESCO Flysch of the Geopark of Zumaia and contemplate the tide rising from your seaside hotel spa.

Into the Heart and Soul of the Basque Lands

As we move westward from Gipuzkoa to Bizkaia, the coastal landscape of quaint villages and sandy beaches transforms into abrupt cliffs and small fishing ports, stately architecture gives way to traditional fishermen homes. A mountain pass leads you to the Urdaibai nature reserve with a stop in the cradle of the Basque history in Gernika, where a single standing millenary oak represents sovereignty and the character of the Basque people. The day comes to an end in Mundaka, the home of the surfing world championships, green beaches and its harbor restaurants that offer us the best of the sea: relaxation and fresh fish.

Fisherman ports to our modern cultural metropolis

We follow the coast westward, in the direction of the cosmopolitan city of Bilbao. Brunch is a special occasion on the dock of an authentic fisherman's guild and watch the morning’s catch be auctioned off to fine restaurants. The landscape becomes increasingly steep until we reach the northernmost point of the entire Cantabrian coast where a monastery anchored on its island and connected by a sprinkle of land by a stone path offers us a unique perspective of the coast, where we finally reach the great Nervión estuary, a large industrial hubbub of the past and a modern cultural metropolis of today.
