Day 1Welcome to Legendary Spain

Our journey together starts in Bilbao’s downtown where your Northern Spain Travel guides will welcome you. We transfer to the Rioja region and spend the morning walking an epic Rioja trail with exquisite views of the region before we stop for lunch in the “capital del Rioja” town of Haro in the majestic heritage hotel Los Agustinos. In the heart of the wine region, our afternoon pleasures are no less than private visits and wine-tasting in exclusive wineries for a wine tasting to sample some of the best wines in the region in charming, authentic bodegas. We lunch at a fourteenth century convent now turned four star hotel in Haro.

Day 2Medieval Roadway

We hike one of the prettiest medieval pathways of la Rioja, through rolling hills and vineyards, stopping at the twin 11th-century monasteries, Yuso and Suso, in San Millan de la Cogolla. We stop along the way for a classic “pintxo and wine” lunch for traditional Rioja cuisine and then visit a magnificent winery for a visit and wine tasting before we transfer to our final destination, ElCiego. Luxuriate at the Marques de Riscal Spa and enjoy a tour of the famed winery. Opt for a dinner-trip on your own to sample the local pintxos at the medieval town of Laguardia which is perched on top of 300 cellars carved out of the rock.

Day 3Luxury and Fine Dining

Leaving Marques de Riscal, and after reaching a peak that offer excellent panoramic views of Ezcaray, we head to town where we dine at the two-Michelin star restaurant El Portal, and enjoy the Rioja mountain air. This is a light walking day, with time to spend your afternoon relaxing, shopping – including a company and store that makes top of the line shawls, scarves, sashes and blankets – a walking tour of the enchanting town and interesting urban town center. Lastly, explore the local tapas bars for dinner at your leisure.

Day 4The land of Carboneros

We explore the natural botanical splendor of the mysterious and little-known Lokiz mountain range on foot. Complete the morning among vineyards to visit the historical landmark ruins of Villamayor castle and Castillo de Monjardín bodega in the foothills of the Pyrenees to sample Navarra wine and have an aperitivo. This castle was an important stronghold for the Kingdom of Navarra in the 12th-century, and is steeped in history. The evening is topped with a food and wine pintxo tour in the winding cobblestone streets of Old Town Pamplona.

Day 5The Holy Grail of Iberian Ham

We hike on paths running high in the mountains through beech tree forests, mythology, dolmens and legends under our footsteps, while soaking up the stunning views of the Urbasa-Andia mountain range. We arrive to a twelfth century Romanesque sanctuary named for Saint Michael, who was said to have slayed a dragon at that site. At a special local free range farm, find out why the Euskal-txerris, or Basque pigs, are a delicacy and one of Spain’s best kept secrets. We sit down to enjoy a culinary extravaganza of Basque Iberian dishes, composed of a 14-course sampling menu. We enjoy an after drink in an authentic nearby cider farm village and country stroll. In the afternoon we venture over into the heart of San Sebastian to sample all the best of the world-renowned pintxos paired with spectacular wines and to revel in the lively and exciting atmosphere.

Day 6Morning to Relax and Say Farewell

In the evening, the magnificent cloister of the Hotel Los Agustinos is where we enjoy fabulous food and wine.

    Since 1898, this remodeled stagecoach post is family establishment passed from parents to children, making Echaurren a centenary building.
